5 Day 4WD Arnhem Land Dreaming Top End Tour Itinerary - 5 days
Darwin to Kakadu National Park via Litchfield National Park
At an early start from Darwin at approximately 7am we make our way to the first stop of our trip, Litchfield National Park. Known for its great swimming waterfalls, you will get to hike and explore areas such as Florence and Wangi Falls*, where you will also enjoy a picnic lunch. Learn about the intriguing cathedral and magnetic termite mounds, which are abundant in the park, and view the beautiful spring-fed streams and sandstone escarpments.
After lunch it's time to bid the sealed road goodbye, as our true four-wheel-drive adventure begins along Old Jim Jim Road taking us deep into Kakadu National Park. As we pass billabongs and cross several waterways, you have the opportunity to spot some of the great wildlife of the park including amazing birdlife, crocodiles and various reptiles.
In the evening we spend time at our private campsite in Cooinda, enjoying dinner and stories from the day before retiring to your permanent tent. (LD)
Kakadu National Park
It's a beautiful start to the morning as we embark on a wildlife cruise on the famous Yellow Waters billabong. The Aboriginal-owned award-winning cruise gives us the opportunity to spot some remarkable and diverse wildlife including the iconic crocodile.
We then head to Nourlangie Rock nearby where you can see how the local indigenous people lived in the area through the generations. The environmental and social changes of the area are evident in the rock art and surrounding areas where archaeologists have uncovered over 20,000 years of Aboriginal occupation.
It's then onto the Bowali Visitor Centre which is named after the land owned by the Mirarr clan. The audio-visual presentations will give you in an insight into the Aboriginal art from artists within Kakadu and surrounding areas.
Our final site for the day is Ubirr Rock, a significant cultural site within Kakadu National Park. Here you can view a wide range of Aboriginal rock art which will be explained and interpreted by your guide, including a famous story about the Rainbow Serpent. We climb the Nadab Lookout for excellent views over the surrounding floodplain and into Arnhem Land as the sun sets.
In the evening we spend time at our private campsite enjoying dinner and stories from the day before retiring to your permanent tent. (BLD)
Arnhem Land and Kakadu National Park
Today is about insight and intrigue into one of the world's oldest cultures, the Aboriginal people of Australia. Travel into remote Western Arnhem Land with your indigenous guide where you will witness ancient Aboriginal art brought to life at Injalak Hill. The views of the surrounding escarpments will take your breath away, with many listing Arnhem Land as their scenic highlight in the Top End. See indigenous artists showing off their skills at the Injalak Art Centre before you return to Kakadu National Park and our private campsite. (BLD)
Kakadu National Park to Katherine
We spend a slower-paced day today as we head to the beautiful Gunlom Falls in Kakadu for a full morning to enjoy all this spectacular area has to offer. Choose to relax at the lower plunge pool or hike to the top of the falls where many rock pools and cascading smaller waterfalls are just asking to be swum under. After lunch, we bid farewell to Kakadu and head to the Katherine region, stopping at Edith Falls for a refreshing swim before retiring to our private campsite near Katherine for dinner and a well deserved rest. (BLD)
Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park to Darwin
Our final morning starts early in order to get to Katherine Gorge before the crowds. Opt for a boat cruise or canoe (optional, at own expense and subject to water levels) or walk along the sheer rock walls that make this place so spectacular. We spend time exploring the spiritual home of the Jawoyn Aboriginal people before lunch. In the afternoon we visit the award-winning *Top Didj Cultural Experience. where we will learn from Top End Aboriginal artist Manuel Pamkal about the significance of his painting style, weapons used and how he lived off the land.
