On our tour walking and hiking in Kakadu National Park, Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon needs a good level of fitness.

Kakadu National Park: Good level of fitness is required for Gunlom Falls and Jim Jim Falls
Uluru: Moderate level of fitness required. The base walk is on flat ground.
Kata Tjuta: Good level of fitness required. Walking on uneven surface required to complete the Valley of the Winds walk
Kings Canyon: Good level of fitness required for a four-hour walk around the canyon's rim.

30 Day Outback and East Coast Package (Darwin to Alice Springs / Sydney to Cairns) Itinerary - 30 days

  • Day 1 Darwin
    Arrive into the tropical city of Darwin today at any time on the day 1, a Tuesday. You will need to make your own way to Youth Shack Darwin, 69 Mitchell Street, Darwin, where you will be picked up in the morning of day two. Please note this day is unguided. Meals, transfers to your accommodation and activities are at your own expense.
  • Day 2 Darwin to Kakadu National Park via Mary River Wetlands
    The first stop of our Top End adventure is at the Mary River Wetlands for our wildlife cruise. This region is home to over 250 bird species and has the highest concentration of saltwater crocodiles in the Southern Hemisphere. Search for the mighty crocs who rule this waterway, buffalo, birds and other wildlife. Our entrance to Kakadu National Park is at the South Alligator River, a picturesque location for a picnic lunch. There’s the opportunity to purchase Aboriginal arts and crafts at the Bowali Visitor Centre before our late afternoon arrival at Ubirr. Here you will view a wide range of ancient Aboriginal art which will be interpreted by your guide. Learn the story of the Rainbow Serpent and climb the Nadab Lookout for panoramic views over the floodplain and beyond into Arnhem Land. As the day draws to a close we head to our private campsite for dinner and our overnight stay. (L,D)
  • Day 3 Kakadu National Park to Mount Bundy
    This morning the jewels of Kakadu National Park await. After breakfast and departing camp we travel off road to the majestic Twin and Jim Jim Falls* for a day of adventure and exploration. Travelling into Twin Falls by 4WD track, a boat shuttle and finally a rocky track and boardwalk we will be rewarded by the beauty of this remote waterfall deep within Kakadu National Park. Afterwards we stay off the beaten track where a walk through monsoon forests and over boulders lead us to Jim Jim Falls. Surrounded by 150 metre cliffs, we spend some time soaking up the natural beauty of this majestic location. This afternoon we depart Kakadu National Park and travel towards Litchfield National Park where we will stop along the way at our private campsite. Tonight, enjoy a hearty meal with your fellow adventurers. (B,L,D)
  • Day 4 Litchfield National Park to Darwin
    Today is spent exploring the waterfalls, spring-fed streams and rugged sandstone escarpments of Litchfield National Park. Marvel at the intriguing magnetic and cathedral termite mounds and swim, hike and explore Florence and Wangi Falls*. Discover the many rock holes and cascading waterfalls of Buley Rockhole before returning to Darwin in the early evening where you will spend the night. (B,L)
  • Day 5 Darwin to Mataranka via Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk)
    A bright and early start for our adventure through the ‘Territory’ to Alice Springs. The afternoon is spent at Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park which is owned by the Jawoyn Aboriginal people. Ancient sandstone has been carved away by the Katherine River to create a deep and picturesque gorge. You may like to take a boat cruise or paddle a canoe (seasonal) through the peaceful water (both optional and additional cost) before retiring tour campsite nearby. (L,D)
  • Day 6 Mataranka to Banka Banka
    A great start to the day, is a soak in the Mataranka Thermal Pools, a lush oasis fringed by paperbark trees. No trip to the ‘Territory’ is complete without a visit to the Daly Waters Pub, an important watering hole for explorers and drovers in days gone by and now a great spot for a cold beer, a bit of history and a ‘fair dinkum outback experience’! Our day winds to a close at historic Banka Banka Cattle Station where we camp for the night. (B,L,D)
  • Day 7 Banka Banka to Alice Springs
    We pass through Tennant Creek and then further along the track are the Devils Marbles (Karlu Karlu) which are a collection of gigantic granite boulders magically balanced on top of one another. Later in the day we cross the Tropic of Capricorn (only 20% of the Northern Territory lays south of this point) then a short time later we arrive into Alice Springs where you will spend two nights chilling out in this desert town.   • Day 8 Free day Alice Springs
    Today is yours to explore the township of Alice Springs. You might like to explore the many Aboriginal art exhibitions or learn about the region’s wildlife at the Alice Springs Reptile Centre or Alice Springs Desert Park. If relaxing is more your style, chill out by the pool or read a book in your comfortable ensuite room. Please note activities and meals are at your own expense on this unguided day.
  • Day 9 Alice Springs to Uluru
    It’s an early rise for your journey to Ayers Rock to meet our fellow travellers joining us there. On arrival to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, visit a camel farm and discover life atop one of the regions earliest forms of transport (camel ride at additional expense). This afternoon embark on an interpretive base walk of Uluru. Those choosing to climb will have the opportunity to do so, weather permitting. (Note: Uluru is a sacred site and the Anangu people ask visitors to respect their law and do not climb). The Cultural Centre is impressive and well worth a visit before watching the ever changing colours of Uluru at sunset. After dinner, some stories and stargazing, it’s time for a good night’s rest at our private campsite before another active day tomorrow. (L,D)
  • Day 10 Uluru to Kings Creek Station
    Your guide will wake you bright and early to experience a mesmerising Uluru sunrise which can be viewed close-by our campsite, early mornings being such a magical time in the desert. Then it’s a short drive to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), an Aboriginal word for “many heads”, to explore its domes of which there are 36 in total. Pull on your hiking shoes and take the Valley of the Winds walk through creek beds, domes and beautiful wilderness. After lunch, it’s farewell to Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park as we travel to Kings Creek Station where we camp for the night. Our campsite really is ‘wayoutback’, set in a private location on this working cattle station. (B,L,D)
  • Day 11 Kings Creek Station to Alice Springs via Kings Canyon
    This morning we enter the Watarrka (Kings Canyon) National Park, home of a mighty chasm with sheer red rock faces which soar over 100 metres above lush palm forests. The rim of Kings Canyon is a 6km round trip walk. You will visit the Amphitheatre, Lost City and tranquil Garden of Eden. In the afternoon after a day of sightseeing, your guide will return you to Haven at Alice Springs where you will spend your final night in the Northern Territory.(B,L)
  • Day 12 Fly from Alice Springs to Sydney
    Bid farewell to the Northern Territory today and make your way to East Coast of Australia to the stunning harbour city of Sydney. You will need to pre-arrange a flight today at your own expense and make your own way to Wake Up Sydney Central. Meals, flight, transfers from the airport and activities are at your own expense. Your guide will not be present today.
  • Days 13 and 14 Free days in Sydney
    You have two wonderful days to explore this world famous city. There is a multitude of activities on offer from day trips to the Blue Mountains and Sydney Harbour cruises. If you are looking to save a penny or two then check out great walks such as the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk along the beautiful cliff tops of the eastern beaches, or set out across the public walkway across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. This wonderful city is your oyster. Accommodation is included on both nights however meals and activities are at your own expense on these unguided days.
  • Day 15 Sydney to Barrington Tops
    We head to the Hunter Valley wine area and do a tasting at one of Australia’s most famous vineyards. We then head through the backcountry to our stunning stop on the edge of Barrington Tops National Park (a World Heritage Listed Area). We stay in a private lodge overlooking the Barrington River. You have the option to ride an inner tube down a scenic part of the river (included). Relax and enjoy the incredible views in the evening. (D)
  • Day 16 Barrington Tops to Spot X Surf Camp
    In the morning we do a bush walk to take in the scenery and wildlife - there are kangaroos, a variety of birds and even platypus. We head north with a visit a Koala hospital to learn about their efforts in preserving Koalas and what we can do to help, and then travel on to our waterfront accommodation at the Spot X Surf Camp, arriving in the early evening.   • Day 17 Spot X Surf Camp to River Retreat (Special Stop)
    This morning you can take part in a group surf lesson or just relax on the beach. In the
    afternoon we travel to our River Retreat. We go for a guided kayaking trip spotting wildlife
    along the way. In the evening have a few drinks around the campfire. We sleep in beds in a
    tipi or swags under the stars. Note: in winter we stay in cabins. . (B,D)
  • Day 18 River Retreat to Byron Bay
    We leave our camp and head up towards Byron Bay, Australia’s famous surf and arts town. We stop in the picturesque town of Yamba along the way and go for a walk and a swim at the Angourie blue pools (weather dependent). (B)
  • Day 19 Byron Bay
    Explore, learn to surf, party, visit the alternative town of Nimbin (additional cost), or just relax and take in the laidback, hippy vibe. We recommend taking a walk to the lighthouse to view the Australian mainland’s most easterly point. Your Loka guide won’t be hanging out with you today, as he/she is getting a hard-earned rest. They will however be able to help you book any activities or give you some tips on restaurants etc, before you arrive in Byron.
  • Day 20 Byron Bay (via Gold Coast & Brisbane) to Rainbow Beach
    We depart Byron Bay and cruise up to the New South Wales/Queensland border and hop out at Danger Point to stretch our legs and check out the view of one of Australia’s best surf spots, Snapper Rock. We then drive into the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Noosa before we continue onto Rainbow Beach for the night. At Rainbow Beach we take a walk up to Carlo Sand Blow for either the sunset or sunrise. (D)
  • Days 21 and 22 Rainbow Beach to Fraser Island
    Get ready for two full days of exploring World Heritage Fraser Island. After a short 10-minute ferry ride from Rainbow Beach you start your adventure of four-wheel-driving on the roads of sand. During your stay on Fraser you will have the chance to spot dingoes in the wild, swim in crystal clear freshwater lakes and swimming holes and explore the diverse landscapes in this unique habitat.Before heading to bed don’t forget to look up to enjoy the millions of stars and maybe even spot the five stars on the Aussie flag – the Southern Cross.

    In the late afternoon on day 22 your guide will return you to your Rainbow accommodation where you have dinner included.

    Your Loka guide won’t travel with you to Fraser Island but you will be well-looked after by the team at Fraser Explorer. Your next Loka guide will pick you up on Thursday / Day 24.

    DAY 21 (L,D). Day 22 –(B,L,D)
  • Day 23 Rainbow Beach
    Today you will have the chance to witness some of the spectacular marine wildlife the Fraser Coast is famous for on a 3 hour tour. You will be treated to a dolphin-watching kayak tour and Great Beach 4WD ride within the Great Sandy National Park.

    Look out for Bottlenose dolphins, Humpback whales (May to November), turtles, manta rays, sting rays, soldier crabs and an array of marine birdlife. (D)
  • Day 24 Rainbow Beach (via Noosa) to Emu Park
    Your Loka guide at 9:30am outside of Frasers on Rainbow
    Hop on the bus and drive to Cooroy where we start our train journey. We travel to Rockhampton where we are met by a local bus, which takes you to our backpacker resort in the cool coastal town of Emu Park.
  • Day 25 Emu Park to Airlie Beach
    Your Loka guide at 8 am at the reception. We grab some breakfast and then head to the Koorana Crocodile Farm to learn about and see up close these famous Australian animals. In the afternoon you can just relax around the resort pool, go on a turtle spotting walk (seasonal), or play lawn bowls (other Australian tradition, extra cost). After dinner, we catch the train and travel overnight to Airlie Beach. It is a modern train with large reclining seats, a bar, and a dining carriage. On arrival into Proserpine in the morning, you will take a local bus into Airlie Beach – the gateway to the beautiful Whitsunday Islands where you will have time to store your luggage before your Whitsundays day trip.

  • Day 26 Whitsunday Islands, snorkeling, reef and Whitehaven Beach
    Today provides an exhilarating ride to world famous Whitehaven Beach, pristine snorkeling reefs and guided Whitsunday Island National Park walks. Visit the Northern and Southern ends of Whitehaven Beach, spending at least two hours relaxing or exploring the 7km of white silica sand.

    Walk to the Southern Whitehaven lookout with breathtaking views of Pentecost Island, join the guided walks to Hill Inlet lookout and snorkel for an hour enjoying the amazing hard and soft corals of the fringing reefs.

    Your Loka guide won’t be present today and you will be in the safe hands of the crew from Ocean Rafting. Head out after your Whitsundays day trip to explore Airlie’s great nightlife and choice of restaurants. (L)
  • Day 27 Airlie Beach (via Townsville) to Magnetic Island
    We start early with a local bus to the train, a ferry out to tropical ‘Maggie Island’, and a local transfer to the accommodation. There is much to explore on the island, as nearly 50% of it is National Park with amazing beaches and abundant wildlife. Your guide will join you on a walk around the Island; otherwise you can do more exploring or just relax by the pool.
  • Day 28 Magnetic Island
    Spend a wonderful day on Magnetic Island. Relax or visit the wildlife park at the resort (extra cost). Your guide will not be present today, you are free to do as you please and enjoy.
  • Day 29 Magnetic Island to Tully
    Travel back to the mainland on a ferry and then travel by train to Tully – getting in at around
    lunchtime. In the afternoon we head out to picturesque ‘Alligator’s Nest’ (no alligators
    thankfully). Enjoy a dip in the swimming hole, surrounded by tropical rainforest. We then
    head back to our accommodation - the historic Mt Tyson pub for dinner. (D)
  • Day 30 Tully to Cairns
    We have an early start to hike to the summit of Mt Tyson, a mountain covered in lush
    rainforest, within the Tully Gorge National Park. We take selfies and time to get to get our
    breath back at summit, then head down to the pub again for a well-earned champagne
    breakfast.
    We then travel back to Tully to catch the train north, arriving into Cairns central train station at
    approximately 4.05pm, where your East Coast adventure comes to an end. (B)

Things you need to know about this tour
  • **Although the group you are traveling with will not exceed 24 passengers, a number of the activities including the cruise in the Whitsundays, four-wheel-drive touring on Fraser Island, rail journey and dolphin cruise is not exclusive to the group. You will travel with additional people and will have larger group sizes on those days. You will also travel with guides specific to those activities, rather than your Loka or Wayoutback Safaris guide.
  • As this is a tour package, your guide and group will change throughout your journey. On the section between Sydney and Cairns, you will travel on Loka transport with Loka guides. While you will have a fixed pre-arranged itinerary, other Loka customers on a more flexible pass will hop on and off throughout the trip.
  • Optional activity prices are subject to change
  • *Please note that Twin and Jim Jim Falls are both seasonal attractions (usually June to November) and access to them is dictated by National Parks at the time of travel. During the time when they are not open, they will be substituted with locations such as Gunlom, Maguk (Barramundi Falls), Yurmikmik or Gubara Springs.
  • Itinerary may change due to cultural reasons, seasonal changes, operational logistics, and accessibility.
  • For the Top End and Red Centre safaris please restrict luggage to a day pack and one soft overnight bag/backpack (maximum 10kg) as the majority of your luggage can be stored at your accommodation. For the Darwin <> Alice Springs and Cairns <> Sydney safaris, a maximum of 23kg in a soft bag or suitcase plus a small day pack is permitted.
  • Swags are used as standard on nights 9 and 10. Clients wishing to hire a dome tent will need to pre-book this and pay a $60 local payment on departure from Alice Springs.
  • This is an open-aged tour, however, most passengers are between the ages of 18-39. Not suitable for those under 18.
  • A domestic flight between Alice Springs and Sydney must be booked independently on day 12 at additional expense.
