Sydney to Barrington Tops
Start your East Coast Adventure tour by exploring the Hunter Valley wine area. You will do a tasting at one of Australia’s most famous vineyards. We then head through the rolling hills of New South Wales to our stunning stop on the edge of Barrington Tops National Park. This is a World Heritage listed area. Your first night on tour is spent in a private lodge overlooking the Barrington River. You have the option to ride an inner tube down a scenic part of the river. Relax and enjoy the incredible views in the evening. (D)
Barrington Tops to Spot X Surf Camp
Up early this morning we head out on a bush walk. There is so much native Australia wildlife to spot including Kangaroos, plenty of birds and if you are lucky platypus. We head north with a visit a Koala hospital to learn about their efforts in preserving Koalas and what we can do to help, and then travel on to our waterfront accommodation at the Spot X Surf Camp, arriving in the early evening. Spot X Surf Camp to River Retreat
This morning you can take part in a group surf lesson or just relax on the beach. In the
afternoon we travel to our River Retreat. We go for a guided kayaking trip spotting wildlife
along the way. In the evening have a few drinks around the campfire. We sleep in beds in a
tipi or swags under the stars. Note: in winter we stay in cabins. (B,D)
River Retreat to Byron Bay
Today its off to the hippy town of Byron Bay, Australia’s famous surf and arts town. We stop in the picturesque town of Yamba along the way and go for a walk and a swim at the Angourie blue pools (weather dependent). Your guide will give you an orientation drive as you head into the Byron Bay township and help you book any activities for the following day. (B)
Today you have a wonderful relaxing day to explore and experience Byron Bay. When in Byron Bay its a must do to walk to the lighthouse to view the most Easterly point in Australia. Keep your eyes peeled for lizards and wildlife on the walk. In Byron Bay you could also learn to surf, party, visit the alternative town of Nimbin (additional cost), or just relax and take in the laidback, hippy vibe. Your Loka guide is getting some hard-earned rest today, so its up to you what you do in Byron Bay.
Byron Bay (via Gold Coast & Brisbane) to Rainbow Beach
Leave behind the beautiful beaches of Byron Bay and cruise up to the New South Wales/Queensland border. We take a look at Danger Point to view one of Australia’s best surf spots, Snapper Rock. We then do a drive through of the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Noosa before we continue onto Rainbow Beach for the night. At Rainbow Beach we take a walk up to Carlo Sand Blow for sunset. (D)
Day 7 and 8
Rainbow Beach to Fraser Island
The next two days will be spent on World Heritage Fraser Island. After a short 10-minute ferry ride from Rainbow Beach you start your adventure of four-wheel-driving on the roads of sand.
During your stay on Fraser Island you will have the chance to spot dingos in the wild, swim in crystal clear freshwater lakes and swimming holes and explore the diverse landscapes in this unique habitat. (Day 7: L, D and Day 8: B, L ,D)
Before heading to bed don’t forget to look up to enjoy the millions of stars and maybe even spot the five stars on the Aussie flag – the Southern Cross.
Your Loka guide won’t travel with you to Fraser Island but you will be well-looked after by the team on Fraser Island. In the late afternoon of day eight your guide will return you to your Rainbow accommodation where you have dinner included.
Dolphin spotting is next on the agenda with a 3 hour dolphin watching kayak tour. This is the perfect chance to see Bottlenose dolphins, Humpback whales, turtles, manta rays, sting rays and a wide array of marine birdlife.
Rainbow Beach (via Noosa) to Country Campout
You will hop in our bus and drive to Cooroy where we start our train journey. We travel to Rockhampton then get met by a local bus, which takes you to our remote farm stay for the night and a traditional swagman dinner around the campfire. We spend the night in an Aussie swag camping out under the stars. (D)
Country Campout/Emu Park to Airlie Beach
In the morning we take a walk around the property and visit a sacred Indigenous site at the base of Mount Wheeler. We then head to the beautiful, little coastal town of Emu Park. In the afternoon you can just relax around the resort pool, go on a turtle spotting walk (seasonal), play lawn bowls or visit a crocodile farm (both extra cost). We catch the train in the evening and travel overnight to Airlie Beach, sleeping on the train. We travel in a modern train with large reclining seats, a bar and a dining carriage. We get into a town called Proserpine in the morning then take a local bus in to Airlie Beach – the gateway to the beautiful Whitsunday Islands where you will have time to store your luggage before your Whitsundays day trip. Whitsunday Islands, snorkeling, reef and Whitehaven Beach
Today provides an exhilarating ride to world famous Whitehaven Beach, pristine snorkeling reefs and guided Whitsunday Island National Park walks.
Visit the Northern and Southern ends of Whitehaven Beach, spending at least two hours relaxing or exploring the 7km of white silica sand.
Walk to the Southern Whitehaven lookout with breathtaking views of Pentecost Island, join the guided walks to Hill Inlet lookout and snorkel for an hour enjoying the amazing hard and soft corals of the fringing reefs. (L)
Please note that your Loka guide won’t be present today and you will be in the safe hands of the crew from Ocean Rafting. Upon completion of your Whitsundays day trip, you will have the night free to explore Airlie’s great nightlife and choice of restaurants.
Airlie Beach (via Townsville) to Magnetic Island
Today we take many modes of transport. First a local bus, then a train, then a ferry and another bus all to bring us to the tropical paradise of Magnetic Island. With nearly 50% of Magnetic Island being National Park you will find there is much to explore. You will have a guided walk around the Island, then its time to do more exploring or just relax by the pool. You will be staying at Bungalow Bay Koala Village YHA on Magnetic Island.
Today you can just relax or visit the resort Wildlife park (extra cost). Your guide will be taking a rest, so you are free to explore the abundant beaches of Magnetic Island.
Magnetic Island to Tully
Travel back to the mainland on a ferry and then travel by train to Tully – getting in at around
lunchtime. In the afternoon we head out to picturesque ‘Alligator’s Nest’ (no alligators
thankfully). Enjoy a dip in the swimming hole, surrounded by tropical rainforest. We then
head back to our accommodation - the historic Mt Tyson pub for dinner. (D)
Tully to Cairns
We have an early start to hike to the summit of Mt Tyson, a mountain covered in lush
rainforest, within the Tully Gorge National Park. We take selfies and time to get to get our
breath back at summit, then head down to the pub again for a well-earned champagne
We then travel back to Tully to catch the train north, arriving into Cairns central train station at
approximately 4.05pm, where your East Coast adventure comes to an end.(B)
Days 17 and 18
You have two days totally free to explore the tropical township of Cairns and its surrounds. We highly recommend taking a day snorkel/dive trip out to the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef.
If you’ve had enough water action then perhaps you’d like to try and skydiving, hot air ballooning or whitewater rafting? Any of these activities can be booked through us at Real Aussie Adventures before you reach Cairns. Please note your Loka guide will not be present on these days but you may have a guide depending on the activities you choose to partake in.

Fly to Alice Springs
Fly from Cairns to Alice Springs (own expense) the most convenient flight would be Qantas 1949 Accommodation in Alice Springs is included tonight.
Alice Springs to Kings Canyon
Leaving Alice Springs our first destination is Kings Creek Station, where most of Australia’s live camels are exported from, and where you will camp for the night. Enjoy the walk around the rim of Watarrka (Kings Canyon) to access the lookout points and enjoy the views of the gorge, sandstone walls and the immense size of the canyon. On the walk you will get to see the renowned water hole known as the Garden of Eden. In the afternoon you can go for a swim in the pool or do one of the optional extra activities (Camel Safaris, Helicopter Flights and Quad Safaris) that are available at Kings Creek Station. (LD)
Kings Canyon to Uluru
Finally you get up close to Uluru! We do the base walk around 'The Rock' at Uluru today. You will visit the Cultural Centre to learn about Aboriginal people. Lunch is prepared back at the campground and then you will have the rest of the day to enjoy the timeless wonder of Uluru. (BLD)
Uluru and Kata Tjuta
An early rise this morning for the magnificent Uluru sunrise and breakfast before doing a hike at Kata Tjuta (The Olgas). Walk the majestic Valley of the Winds which cuts through the uniquely domed rock formations. After lunch, return to your campsite and relax in the afternoon before seeing another Uluru sunset. (BLD)
Uluru to Coober Pedy
After an early start we drive to Coober Pedy, on the way you will see striking desert landscapes including the sandstone formation known as the Breakaways. Coober Pedy is where most of the world’s supply of beautiful opals come from. The landscape here is like you’ve landed on Mars. After a visit to Josephine’s Kangaroo Orphanage and dinner you will sleep underground like the locals do in bunkhouse accommodation. (BLD)
Coober Pedy to Wilmington
Enjoy a morning in Coober Pedy including a tour of the town and an opal mine. You can also have a go at “noodling” for opals, visit an opal shop or any of the other underground attractions. In the afternoon continue to travel south to the Flinders Ranges where you’ll sleep among the red gum trees of Stony Creek Bush Camp. (BLD)
Wilmington to Adelaide
Start the day with the steep hike up Dutchman’s Stern for the best 360 views of the ocean and surrounding ranges and plains. In the afternoon enjoy a refreshing stop at a winery in the Clare Valley before arriving in Adelaide at around 6pm. (BL)
Adelaide to Kangaroo Island
Sit back and enjoy the fabulous coastal drive towards Kangaroo Island via the Fleurieu Peninsula. At Cape Jervis you will take the ferry across Backstairs Passage to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island.
Once on Kangaroo Island your island experience begins with the panoramic views from the top of Prospect Hill.
Over the next two days you will experience wildlife and wilderness including up close encounters with sea lions on a beach walk at Seal Bay, sand-boarding at Little Sahara, kayaking down the Harriet River, snorkelling and swimming at beautiful North Coast beaches and bush quad biking at sunset (optional extra).
Your overnight accommodation is at a farmhouse at Flinders Chase surrounded by koalas, kangaroos, possums and the occasional echidna. After dinner, which might be an Aussie BBQ or alternative, spend your night storytelling, wildlife spotting and playing the didgeridoo (L,D).
Kangaroo Island to Adelaide
In the morning we explore Flinders Chase National Park, the largest on the island, with a short hike. Flinders Chase is home to vast tracts of untamed wilderness, the elusive platypus and other wildlife which you might see.
Today we visit Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, where you can view a colony of New Zealand Fur Seals.
Late in the afternoon you will return to the ferry at Penneshaw for the return crossing to Cape Jervis and the drive back to Adelaide, usually arriving at about 8.30pm. Accommodation is included (B,L)
Travel through the Adelaide Hills to the most famous wine making region in Australia – the Barossa Valley. On the way to your first wine tasting, you will stop at the world’s largest Rocking Horse and the amazing Whispering Wall. Jacob’s Creek Winery is one of the most well known in Australia and at their Visitor’s Centre you will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the winery, and enjoy an educational wine tasting presentation.
At the small, family-owned winery, Kies, the wines here are only sold at their cellar door. At their rustic winery cottage you can taste a selection of their wines. A hearty Aussie barbeque lunch of marinated kangaroo, steak, sausages, chicken and salads will be prepared by your guide. After lunch you will get to tour the cellars and taste the wine at the pretty Richmond Grove winery, situated on the edge of the North Para River. After a quick stop at the Menglers’s Hill Lookout for a view across the valley, the fourth and final winery you will visit is the historic Seppeltsfield winery.
You will return to Adelaide by about 5pm. Accommodation is included (L)
Adelaide to Grampians National Park
Leaving Adelaide sit back and enjoy the landscapes through the Adelaide Hills on the way to lunch at Mt. Arapiles. At the Grampians National Park you will spend the afternoon hiking to the bottom of MacKenzie Falls and enjoy the views from The Balconies lookout point. Later in the day, you might see kangaroos and other wildlife come out to play. Tonight you will stay in the heart of the Grampians National Park in hostel accommodation. (LD)
Grampians National Park to Twelve Apostles
Up early this morning we head straight to Brambuk Aboriginal Cultural Centre before doing some more hiking in the beautiful Grampians. Taking lunch at Tower Hill Reserve, the site of a dormant volcano, wetland, lake and home to lots of wildlife. Travelling along the Great Ocean Road highlights include the iconic Loch Ard Gorge, London Bridge and the Bay of Martyrs not to mention the spectacular coastal scenery in the area, finishing the day with a sunset at the Twelve Apostles rock formation. Overnight you will stay in hostel accommodation on the Great Ocean Road. (BLD)
Great Ocean Road to Melbourne
Explore rainforests on our last day on tour at Otway National Park. As we drive the Great Ocean Road you will see it's one of the most spectacular coastal roads ever! We drop into the beachside towns of Apollo Bay and Lorne on the Great Ocean Road. The famous surf coast includes visits to Anglesea, Bells Beach and Torquay (home of surf wear brands Rip Curl and Quiksilver). Your final stop is at the Split Point Lighthouse featured in the Round the Twist television series, before heading through Geelong to arrive in Melbourne at approximately 7pm. (BL)

**Although the group you are traveling with will not exceed 24 passengers, a number of the activities including the cruise in the Whitsundays, four-wheel-drive touring on Fraser Island, rail journey and dolphin cruise is not exclusive to the group. You will travel with additional people and will have larger group sizes on those days. You will also travel with guides specific to those activities, rather than your Loka or Wayoutback Safaris guide.
As this is a tour package, your guide and group will change throughout your journey. On the section between Sydney and Cairns, you will travel on Loka transport with Loka guides. While you will have a fixed pre-arranged itinerary, other Loka customers on a more flexible pass will hop on and off throughout the trip.Optional activity prices are subject to change.
This package is a combination of safari products and therefore the guide and passengers will differ during each section. Passengers will be staying independently at the accommodation (included) between each of the safaris.
On the Alice Springs to Melbourne section of the tour camping/dorm customers will spend 7 nights in a dorm and 4 nights camping in swags only.
Sleeping bags are included for twin/double/single customers. Dorm customers will be required to pay a $30 fee to their guide in Alice Springs. Passengers are permitted to bring their own sleeping bags. Please specify this at the time of booking.
